On October 25th I did a shoot with Melissa Drew for Antoxica Designs. Antoxica is a corset manufacturer from Sweden and Melissa has a just received a modeling contract with them. Melissa needed to get some product shots of some of the items and this is what we got.

Marie Antoinette

A while back I was talking with Brooke on doing a Marie Antoinette shoot but in never came about till this week. A month ago I contacted Chelsea Eden to see if she would be interested in doing the outfits for the shoot and she kind enough to jump in with us.

We lined up a few models and makeup artist and Brooke did both. We had Ciara play the role of Marie, Brooke as a member of her entourage and Susanne who I met at a Starbucks I frequent as a servant girl and they were all perfect.

L vs. L Cheapo

Recently on POTN I purchased a Yashica ML 50mm f/2 mount lens for the whopping price of $25 shipped. This lens was originally for Yashica and Contax manual focus 35mm film cameras and uses an adapter to allow it to be used on the EF mount of the Canon dslrs. The lens came to me in like new condition and I purchased the adapter from Rainbow Imaging on ebay.

When I first switched over to Canon from Olympus one of the first lens purchases I made was the Carl Zeiss ZE 50mm f/1.4. It was a very nice lens with great color, great bokeh, and built like a tank, but for the price I was not using as much as I should and ended up selling it. The 50mm focal length is one I don't use often (I'd rather be at 85 or 35), so when I saw this for $25 I figured why not pick it up and try it out and I have been very pleased.

This morning while I was out getting acquainted with the 50 I was wondering how well it compares to Canon L glass. Canon L glass is the best that Canon has to offer and they are truly nice lenses, I currently shoot the EF 85mm f/1.2L II and EF 24-70mm f/2.8L. I don't have a 50mm to compare it against so it went up a against the 85. For the test I did nothing fancy, both cameras at f/8 on a tripod, manual focus using live view and all adjustments in post are the same. The 85 was moved a little further back due to the focal length.

First is the Yashica shooting the 85.

Now the 85 shooting the Yashica.

And then the 24-70 shooting both the 85 and Yashica.

Now the test is not scientific in any way. Just some photos comparing the cameras at f/8 and to me the clear winner is the 85. It has better contrast and is sharper, but not by much. In terms of value the Yashica cant be beat. It was a fraction of the price of the 50L, sure it's not 1.2 but it was only $25. Now the big surprise to me was the image quality of the Yashica compared to the 24-70L. The L does have better contrast but the image is softer and shows chromatic aberration. I'm a little disappointed with the 24-70 but it is said that primes do have better image quality than zooms.

I don't think I'll give up my L lenses I'm using now but I am definitely going to be looking for used manual focus before buying anything else. Contax has some nice Zeiss glass that can be picked up at good prices. This coming week I also have some Mamiya m645 medium format lenses coming to try out. Chelsea Eden Photo Shoot

This past weekend I had the pleasure of doing a photo shoot for Chelsea Eden, a very talented local clothing designer. She set us up in a great house owned by a great family who gave full access to the house and property. There were a total of six photographers and two fabulous ladies doing hair & makeup. Outstanding, that is the only way I can describe the models. They were all great to work with and very professional. It was nice meeting a group of great people and making some new friends. The New Year Can Only Get Better

Well the new year started out very bad. On the 31st of December as my wife was on her way to work she came down with a sudden and very severe headache. She tried to ride it for a while at work but the pain became so intense that she ended up going to the ER. A CT scan revealed that she had blood on the left side of her brain, and the following morning a MRI and a high contrast CT scan both showed a small aneurysm. Her neurosurgeon said that it had bled out for few seconds and it had clotted.

Due to the type and area that the aneurysm and the location she had to under go surgery the following day. The surgery went well, but after seven days in ICU she had to under go a second surgery for a permanent shunt to drain excess spinal fluid that the ventricles couldn't process. After a couple of weeks in the hospital She is home and is looking to make a full recovery. We owe much thanks to the great team of neurosurgeons at Fremont Rideout.

Toward the end of last year Brooke and I where working on putting a night shoot together but schedules kept getting in the way. Then about a 2months ago we tried to get another one together but couldn't find a location without having to sell a kidney, old gas stations are hard to find. So this last weekend we pulled this one out late into Saturday night, at least for me. The week leading up to it I was getting stoked about taking out the ring-flash then as I was testing my equipment the day of the shoot my Vagabond (battery pack) went down. Kind of bummed me out but the speed lights picked up the slack, thank you Lumopro's. Here are a few from the shoot.

While sitting around the house as the boys took their naps I figured I might as well practice some product shots. It's a very easy setup, just two lights, a couple sheets of white foam board, and a sheet of plexiglass. It also gave me a reason to break out my new Canon 5d mkII and give it a go.

I received a new beauty dish a couple of weeks ago and like I do with every thing else I used my kids as test subjects. The problem is with my kids is I never know what I'm going to end up with when it comes to photos of them. My daughter Bailey will follow some direction for awhile but then looses interest and go's her own way. The boys on the other hand are all over the place, crawling on me, wanting to see the picture on the camera, moving the lights, or hitting each other.

The night I was shooting these photos the Boys would not leave the light alone. They were drawn to it like bugs to one of those bug zapping lights. So last night I was going through the files and came across this photo of Landon. I felt it really captured his personality. He's a little moody and at times seems to be the outcast with his siblings. Then tonight after He had been thrown of the chair by his sister and took a sippy-cup to the head by his brother I new this reflected him.

I love B&W Magazine. Its geared more for the Fine Photography Collector but I find it's a great place to find inspiration. It has great articles showcasing some of the greatest photographers and their work. If you are a fan of black and white photography this is the magazine to have. It is published bi-monthly and can be picked up at most book stores.

This is a Photoshop plugin I've been playing with lately. It gives your photos the HDR/Tonemaped look without having to use multiple exposures. You go to your filters in PS and apply and adjust. Very easy and very fast.

Flash Bracket

While in San Francisco for the Outside Lands Music Festival I stopped by Calumet and picked up a flash bracket. I purchased a Custom Brackets QRS-H2 with a pmc base. So far Ive been very pleased with it, it gives much better control of the light emitted from the flash and adds more creativity I feel.
